Jim Anderson built a career and a life by working and serving his hometown. During his younger years he lifeguarded at Seltzer Pool, caddied at the Shelby Country Club, worked with legendary veterinarian Doc Henson and at the Shelby Pure Milk Company.
While at SHS Jim played football all four years and was a member of the 1946 Northern Ohio League champions. He also met Doris Robb ’46 who would become his wife on June 14, 1950.
After graduating from Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science at The Ohio State University. He returned to Shelby and began building a career at Shelby Mutual Insurance Company, rising to vice president of human resources before retiring in 1989. He had hired many fellow Shelbians, helping them launch their own careers. Says a fellow alum, “Jim was an avid supporter of all things Shelby.” For many years he served on the boards of Shelby City Parks, Shelby City Schools and Pioneer Career and Technology Center, including terms as president of each. He also volunteered at the Shelby Relays & was a regular at SHS athletic events.
After retiring, Jim golfed in the Shelby Retirees League. He served as treasurer of the Class of ’47 until 2006. And he took immense joy in spending time with his granddaughter Abbey.
Jim’s three children are James “Scoot” ’70, Mike ’72 and Amy Bartosiak ’74.
