Entrepreneurism + Innovation + Community Involvement
For Karl Milliron ’83, his immersion into the world of business started early. As taught by his father, “If you want something you have to earn it.” At age 5 he would go to work with his dad on Saturdays where his first job was cleaning employee restrooms for $1.00. (Big money for a 5-year- old in 1970). Throughout his academic years, Karl continued working part-time after school and in summers at the family business.
After graduating SHS, Karl he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration at Ohio University. He then took jobs in Columbus with two auto dealerships, managing their parts departments to learn new business practices.
In 1991 Karl returned to Shelby to manage Milliron Auto Parts, focusing on modernizing the automotive recycling facility. He soon expanded operations and managed additional facilities in Marion and Newark. Karl purchased The Auto Parts Division from his father Grant in 2008.
In addition to running the auto parts company, in 2003 Karl founded Midwest Automotive Trucking LLC – a contract carrier company servicing other automotive recyclers in the industry transporting parts bought and sold between one another. Starting with 8 customers serviced by 5 employees and 5 trucks, it currently services 275 customers, employs 110 persons, operates 60 truck routes daily and manages freight through 10 locations covering the eastern 2/3 of the continental United States.
Karl also co-owns EZ Suite software which was founded in 2011 with partner Jim McKinney. Always looking to improve the industry, Karl and Jim found innovative ways to address shortfalls within the industry software providers through add-on software modules which they developed. Starting with 5 customers in 2014 they now serve over 500.
Throughout Karl’s career, he has made time for community and industry involvement. He has or currently serves on the boards of Friendly House, Shelby Foundation, Richland Foundation, former Shelby Chamber of Commerce, Shelby Senior Center, Richland Area Chamber of Commerce, and North Central State College Foundation. He also has served on the boards of both state and national Automotive Recycling Associations.
Karl gives credit for his successful career to his father who taught him good work ethics, his faith in God and Jesus Christ who guide him daily, and the support of his wife Jill whom he married in 1989. Some of Karls favorite sayings are: “Always do the right thing and you will never be wrong.” “Take care of the business and the business will take care of you.” “Support your community and the community will support you.”
