If ever something seemed a perfect fit, for Dave Downs ‘70 it was track.
While at SHS Dave earned two letters each in track and football. He also was elected president of his senior class. After graduating Dave earned a bachelor’s degree at Mount Union College (now University of Mount Union) and later a master’s degree in education at Bowling Green State University.
Dave was drawn back to his hometown and to track. In 1974 he began a 35-year career teaching in Shelby elementary and middle schools. Simultaneously he began coaching SHS varsity track teams. Together they prospered. During 36 years as head coach Daves teams won 11 Northern Ohio League championships, 44 Invitational/Relays titles, 6 district titles, 5 district runners-up, 2 regional titles, 2 state championships and 1 state runner-up. Passionate about helping develop student-athletes, Dave also coached football, both middle school and for nine years SHS varsity. Although retired, he and track remain a twosome as he serves as a track and field registered official. Dave also has made time for community involvements. For years he delivered Meals On Wheels and served as president of the Shelby Park Board of which he is still a member.
Observes a friend, “Dave has shown remarkable dedication to students, both in the classroom and on the track.”
